Banyawarra
![]() Daphne Banyawarra, a member of the Ganalbingu clan, was born in the bush on Milingimbi Island. From her bush upbringing, Banyawarra made huge advances in her studies and in November 2005, she and a group of Charles Darwin University academics received a special Prime Minister's Award in Canberra, for the development of an innovative Aboriginal language project. Daphne Banyawarra is a full-time educator and the only qualified Yolngu teacher in her community, she is often called upon to facilitate interstate workshops and conferences in education and linguistics. Daphne Banyawarra was the translator for Ten Canoes, which is the newly released, award-winning film, shot entirely in an Aboriginal language. |
