Sacred 'Madayin' Yidaki
Badikupa made this to be the ultimate sacred Galpu clan yidaki, the voice of Wititj the olive python.
'Madayin' refers to sacred business and this 'Madayin Yidaki' is a Galpu clan totemic instrument which is only used for specific sacred ceremonies and in certain ritual contexts.
As such this beautiful long Yidaki would not be seen in public in Arnhem Land. As Galpu yidaki custodian, senior lawman Djalu Gurruwiwi has just given permission for this to be released and I am very fortunate and humbly grateful to have 'borrowed' it for a while.
This is a super special Yidaki and although you could be lucky to see one in a museum, it is extremely rare to find one being offered for sale!
The Galpu have two special types of yidaki, but they only talk about one of them. Badikupa remarks gravely that should he reveal any more about their special yidaki, other Yolngu might punish him and his family with sorcery!
