Every night thousands of people stop breathing during sleep. For some people this can happen many hundreds of times a night. Every time you stop breathing, an ‘Apnoea’, your brain instructs your body to briefly awaken. Most Obstructive Sleep Apnoea victims have no memory of this all night life-and-death struggle for breath. OSA prevents sufferers from enjoying a restful sleep which leaves them feeling ‘dog tired’ - sleepy and exhausted - during the daytime.
Many people have OSA and don’t even realise it! Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is more common in men aged 30 - 65 years, though it can occur in all age groups. This can be quite alarming if you're a professional driver! Current data suggests it affects an estimated 4% of males and 2% of females in the UK. Research commissioned by the Government found a fifth of motorway collisions are caused by drivers falling asleep at the wheel and one in ten crashes on all of Britain's roads - around 24,000 a year are also linked to fatigue.
Early recognition and treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is vitally important, especially as it has been concluded that OSA increases the risks of having an irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart attack and strokes!
In 2005, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) published research that learning to play the didgeridoo helped alleviate snoring.
The BMJ published research found that after four months of daily didgeridoo practice, patients saw a marked reduction in their snoring and related sleep apnea symptoms!
